A hospitality company announced Thursday that it was buying the shuttered Oceanview Motel in Wildwood Crest and vowed to reopen the “doo-wop” retro-style property while preserving its distinctive architectural features.

Change is coming as bed-and-breakfasts continue to disappear, and longtime beachfront hotel owners are retiring and selling out.

Cape May bills itself as “the nation’s oldest seashore resort,” and its hotels have long attracted visitors looking for Victorian charm rather than the latest amenities. Although you will still find that atmosphere — the entire downtown is a National Historic Landmark — there are signs of change.

A staple family-owned Cape May hotel has sold to a local hospitality management company for $23 million as it enters its 56th year in operation.

The property has been sold to Madison Resorts, which plans to continue to operate it as a beach resort. The deal closed at the end of 2021.
